Our Approach to OCD Treatment
At BrainBody OCD Counseling, OCD treatment begins with understanding the individual, not just the diagnosis. BrainBody OCD Counseling clinicians develop treatment plans around the person’s symptoms, goals, needs, and treatment fit rather than assuming one strategy works for every OCD presentation.
Treatment may focus on reducing compulsive responses, increasing the ability to tolerate uncertainty and difficult internal experiences, and reconnecting with meaningful activities. BrainBody OCD Counseling’s approach is collaborative and compassionate while remaining focused on interventions that directly address OCD patterns and related anxiety concerns.

Why Choose an OCD Specialist?
OCD often benefits from treatment specifically designed for obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Supportive or insight-oriented therapy alone may not directly target the cycle of obsessions, compulsions, avoidance, and reassurance-seeking that can maintain OCD. This does not mean all talk therapy is harmful; it means treatment fit and OCD-specific training matter.
BrainBody OCD Counseling clinicians look for subtle compulsions, mental rituals, reassurance-seeking, and the difference between productive reflection and rumination. Specialized OCD care can help a clinician design appropriate exposures when ERP is indicated, tailor treatment to the person’s symptom presentation, and monitor progress without repeatedly debating the content of an obsession.
OCD Therapies Used at BrainBody OCD Counseling
BrainBody OCD Counseling offers multiple OCD-focused approaches, but not every client receives every modality. ERP is a first-line psychological treatment for OCD. I-CBT and ACT may be added or emphasized when clinically appropriate based on the person’s symptoms, goals, and individualized treatment plan.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP is a first-line psychological treatment for OCD. It involves collaboratively and gradually approaching obsession-related triggers while reducing or refraining from compulsive responses. BrainBody OCD Counseling clinicians tailor ERP practice to the person’s symptoms, goals, and readiness.

I-CBT is an OCD-focused cognitive approach that addresses obsessional doubt and the reasoning processes that can turn a possibility into a compelling story. BrainBody OCD Counseling may integrate I-CBT when it fits the person’s presentation and treatment plan.

ACT may be incorporated to support psychological flexibility and values-guided behavior. It can help people make room for difficult thoughts and feelings while taking meaningful action, including alongside ERP when clinically appropriate.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) has two connected parts: exposure means approaching thoughts, images, situations, sensations, or memories that trigger OCD-related distress, while response prevention means reducing or refraining from the compulsive response that usually follows. The work is gradual, collaborative, and tailored to the treatment plan.
ERP creates opportunities to learn that intrusive thoughts, uncertainty, and uncomfortable emotions can be experienced without relying on compulsions to make them go away. The goal is not necessarily to eliminate anxiety during every exposure. Rather than trying to prove that a feared outcome is impossible, ERP can support new learning about uncertainty, distress, and the person’s ability to respond without compulsions.
Contemporary exposure therapy can be informed by inhibitory learning, one influential framework for understanding and optimizing exposure. Learn more about how Exposure and Response Prevention works for OCD.

What to Expect From OCD Treatment at BrainBody OCD Counseling
OCD treatment at BrainBody OCD Counseling begins with assessment and collaborative treatment planning, followed by active treatment and ongoing evaluation of progress. The exact sequence and pace depend on the individualized plan.
1. Specialized OCD Assessment
BrainBody OCD Counseling begins with a comprehensive intake to understand symptoms, history, goals, and treatment needs. When clinically appropriate, the clinician-administered Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) may be used to assess OCD symptom severity and establish a baseline. The Y-BOCS does not diagnose OCD by itself.
2. Education and Treatment Planning
The clinician and client identify obsessions, behavioral and mental compulsions, avoidance, reassurance-seeking, triggers, and treatment goals. The plan may include a hierarchy when ERP is indicated, but BrainBody OCD Counseling does not assume every approach uses the same hierarchy or sequence.
3. Active OCD Treatment
Active treatment depends on the individualized plan. When ERP is used, sessions may include in-session practice, gradually approaching selected triggers or uncertainty, reducing compulsive responses, and between-session practice when appropriate. I-CBT or ACT exercises may be included when they fit the plan.
4. Maintaining Progress
BrainBody OCD Counseling and the client review treatment gains, notice returning OCD patterns, and practice responding differently to future triggers. Where appropriate, maintenance planning can include continued valued activities, skills practice, and relapse-prevention planning.
